Apart from questionable, or at least exceptional precedents, in particular the emerald that Nero used to watch circus shows, spectacles were introduced in the fourteenth century, having probably been invented by a friar from a Venetian convent. At the beginning they were rare and expensive, but towards the end of the fifteenth century they became sufficiently widespread to begin to have a significant economic impact. In fact, they extended the working life of all those whose jobs required good visual ability, who would otherwise have had to stop working at around 40−50 years old, the age at which the presbyopia (long-sightedness) tended to manifest.
